Owe it All to You
I wrote this song in 2005 when I was briefly a TAXI member. After that time, having it sit on the shelf seemed kind of sad but I needed the right vocalist. In spring 2007 I got in touch with macjammer Ledebutant and she very kindly put me in touch with a young vocalist - fellow macjammer guitapick's daughter Ava. She did several takes and I've chosen the one I liked the most. Thank you Ava for your moving vocal performance on this song - it was just what I was looking for. I also posted this song on macjams and you can leave me a comment there if you'd like: www.macjams.com
Owe it All to You : Music & Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2004
right from the start, dad
you filled my life with love and laughter
you nurtured my soul
to be
healthy and whole
you fed my senses
you let me dream about tomorrow
you’d catch me when I’d fall
and taught me to stand tall
you were there to show the way
you’re the reason I am who I am today
and who I want to be
you were always there for me
the best dad there could ever be
I love you so
I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
and when I’m grown, dad
and I have children of my own
I know that your care
and love
aren’t far away
and all of life’s lessons
will help me to make the right decisions
I know that you’ll approve
cuz I learned it all from you
you were there to show the way
you’re the reason I am who I am today
and who I want to be
you were always there for me
the best dad there could ever be
I love you so
I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
you were there to show the way
everything I am today
you were there to show the way
I owe it all, I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
Let Your Spirit Fly
This is my foray into the world of Disney-style songs, and I was lucky to have vocalist Emily Rohm record some of it. Unfortunately however, vocal recording was never completed hence only the two-minute sample here.
Let Your Spirit Fly : Music & Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2005
promise me we’ll stay the course together
believe that we can make this happen on our own
in time we’ll come to see the better days ahead
there’s much of life that we have never known
let your spirit fly
let your mind’s imagination
reach up for the sky
it’s a magical sensation
there’s no reason to deny
the hopes and dreams we hold inside
time will pass and we’ll grow old together
having lived our lives with nothing to regret
there’ll be moments when our thoughts go to the past
a history that we shall not forget
let your spirit fly
let your mind’s imagination
reach up for the sky
it’s a magical sensation
there’s no reason to deny
the hopes and dreams we hold inside
let a brand new day begin
a wondrous point of view
to wash away the tears of yesterday
let your spirit fly
let your mind’s imagination
reach up for the sky
it’s a magical sensation
there’s no reason to deny
the hopes and dreams we hold inside
Deepest Part of Me
This is feel-good bubble-gum pop song and just good fun! (so why haven’t I written more of them??)
Deepest Part of Me : Music & Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2005
feels, like, I’m always out on the edge
cold, wind, cutting through my mind
reach for, I try to reach for the ledge
hope, I, don’t lose my grip this time
then you walked into my world
helped me mend my broken soul
you became my guide
you showed me who, you showed me who I am
you found the deepest part of me
you’ve got the deepest part of me
oh yeah,
nobody’s ever been there before
you found the deepest part of me
you’ve got the deepest part of me
oh yeah,
nobody’s ever been there before
now, I, can see the world around me
first, time, I feel I’m truly alive
it’s, not, so bad it’s not so scary
this, way, I live a better life
I have happy dreams again
rainbow colours never end
all things old are new
you showed me who, you showed me who I am
you found the deepest part of me
you’ve got the deepest part of me
oh yeah,
nobody’s ever been there before
you found the deepest part of me
you’ve got the deepest part of me
oh yeah,
nobody’s ever been there before
Mr. Right Now
This song makes up what you could call the trilogy of songs I wrote that were inspired by the reality TV show “Average Joe”. While commenting about the show, my husband said “she doesn’t really want Mr. Right, she wants 'Mr. Right Now'", and voilà.
Mr. Right Now : Music & Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2004
she says that she wants to meet, the perfect guy
so she goes on a reality show, to give it a try
but the men she’s about to meet, and get to know
are the kind you and I would call, the average joe
well she said
this is a rude surprise
but these are really very special guys
so I think that I’ll stick around
but you know, what I’m going to say
it’s the truth, can’t sweep it away
here it comes, it’s as clear as day
she doesn’t want Mr.Right
she wants a Mr.Right Now now now now
she wants a Mr.Right Now now now now
repeat
it’s not very long before she falls for some of the guys
she starts to see beyond the looks, beyond what just meets the eye
but soon there’s about to be a nasty turn of events
it’s sure to cause alot of grief, to those average gents
it’s so cruel
one more group of men
the shortest one is maybe five ten
and they’ll be moving into the house
handsome, buff, so muscular
they’ve got chiselled features, golden tans, perfect hair and great big hands
designer clothes and shaven chests, the whitest teeth the freshest breath
well you know, how the story goes
it’s the end, for those average joes
the sad truth, from this reality show
is she doesn’t want Mr.Right
she wants a Mr.Right Now now now now
she wants a Mr. Right Now now now now
repeat
Average Joe
I was inspired to write this song from watching the then new reality TV series by the same name. I thought the show provided tons of good material for songwriting. The first version I wrote was more of a mid-tempo pop genre song, but it didn’t quite seem to work. Sometime later I arranged it into a faster tempo punk style, and I think it works better. Many thanks go to musician and songwriter Neil Speers who provided live guitars on this punk version.
Average Joe : Music and
Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2003
please, please, please pick me now
you, you, have no idea how
wonderful I really am
all that you see is
I’m not a hunk, I don’t have a tan
I’m not so good-looking but that’s not who I am
the average joe, he wants to be
loved for his personality
to hell with good looks, they never last
what do you have left when they’re a thing of the
past
he is the one you should love
the average joe, the average joe
the average joe joe joe joe the average joe
here come the gorgeous guys
it’s just a fancy disguise
for all the faults underneath
it can’t make up for
the fact that they’ve never had to believe
there’s more to a man than you can readily see
the average joe, he wants to be
loved for his personality
to hell with good looks, they never last
what do you have left when they’re a thing of the
past
you’ve got to have a man in your life
who’s happy to live as husband and wife
he’s so committed and ready to give
all that he has for you to happily live
he is the one you should love
the average joe, the average joe
the average joe joe joe joe the average joe
the average joe, he wants to be
loved for his personality
to hell with good looks, they never last
what do you have left when they’re a thing of the
past
repeat chorus
he is the one you should love
the average joe, the average joe
the average joe joe joe joe the average joe
joe, the average joe
the average joe joe joe joe
the average joe
joe, the average joe
the average joe joe joe joe
the average joe
Average Schmo
As with the song “Average Joe”, this song was inspired by the then new reality TV show “Average Joe”, which was chock full of the stuff that songs are made of. At one point, a spin-off series was aired and the antics of the main character inspired this song.
Average Schmo : Music & Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon
© 2004
remember average Joe
the one from that first show
the nice guy, who went home alone
he thought he’d won her heart
but he forgot the part
that he’s still an average Joe
then people felt really sad
and they felt rather bad
that he was still all alone
so they gave him his own reality show
and the average Joe became
the average Schmo Schmo, Schmo Schmo
the average Joe Joe, Joe Joe
became the average Schmo Schmo, Schmo Schmo
knick knack paddy wack
look out average Joe is back
but now it’s up to him to choose
and he’s got very little to lose
and everything to gain
and hopefully with little pain
he’ll get himself a lovely wife
and have a really beautiful life
but when it gets to the end
he’s got two women standing there
waiting for him to decide
he starts to panic when
his parents give him their advice
and he knows what he should really do, but he can’t
he’s in too deep and it’s too late for him to not
be a fool
Joe Joe, Joe Joe, became the average Schmo Schmo,
Schmo Schmo
the average Joe Joe, Joe Joe, became the average
Schmo Schmo, Schmo Schmo
just when you thought it was safe
to say an average Joe
would not make such a mistake
we give a real life one his own reality show
and this average Joe became
the average Schmo Schmo, Schmo Schmo
the average Joe Joe, Joe Joe
became the average Schmo Schmo, Schmo Schmo
the average, the average Joe
became the average Schmo
the average, I say the average Joe
became the average Schmo
No Mistakes
I was watching an interview when at one point the interviewee said “there’s no mistakes in life, just lessons to be learned” and I thought wow, that would make for a great song. Thus was born “No Mistakes.” Many thanks to fellow musician and songwriter Bryan Baker for the live drum playing he recorded into this song.
No Mistakes : Music and Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2004
when you said good bye I knew there was a reason
a reason for it all to end
I didn’t understand, I didn’t want to listen
I didn’t want to face myself at all
and then you called me, wanting to explain
I should have talked with you but I
didn’t even wannna try
because I was afraid to cry
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons, to be learned
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons to be learned
repeat
I just need some direction (I’m falling for her)
please just give me some connection (I feel the need to belong)
the moral of this story is... there isn’t one
one to be found in here or anywhere, out there
I want to know myself, get my feet firmly on the ground
I’ve been floating free for far too long
it’s an addiction, this needing to be free
a kinda conviction that I
didn’t even wanna know
but somehow it just stole the show
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons, to be learned
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons to be learned
repeat
it’s so hard to be strong, to hold on
I’ve got to give and take and
say I can, give a damn, be a man, lend a hand
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons, to be learned
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons to be learned
repeat
I just need some direction (I’m falling for her)
please, just give me some connection (I feel the need to belong)
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons, to be learned
there’s no mistakes in life
just lessons to be learned
repeat
Bug In A Web
This song was the result of another song I had written that I realized contained not one but two choruses. So after separating the chorus that didn’t really belong, it became the chorus of this Beatles-style song. Of all the songs I’ve written so far, I would say that the lyrics for this song were amongst the most challenging for me, probably because the particular style of this song took me a little out of my comfort zone.
Bug in a Web : Music and Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon © 2004
your words last night spin in my head
I’m tossing turning in my bed
how I’ve tried, tried to talk to you
all around me’s dark and grey
I’m yearning for a sunny day
how I’ve tried, to shine some light on you
nothing that I do or say
will make this feeling go away
I’ve tried, that’s for sure
you never want to hear me out
it doesn’t matter what about
I’ve got to get, get away
why do I feel like a bug in a web
and the spider who spun it was you
why do I feel like I’m lost in a tale
and the writer who wrote it is you
you know what you do
it’s all about you!
why do I, why do why do I
why do I feel like, feel like feel like
why do I, why do why do I
why do I feel like feel like feel like feel like
there’s nothing more that I can say
no reason left for me to stay
how I tried, tried to be with you
believe me I won’t soon forget
the love we had and what it meant
how I tried, to keep on loving you
I don’t think you realize
just how much I had compromised
I tried, that’s for sure
it’s time for me to break away
and find myself that sunny day
I’ve got to get, get away
why do I feel like a bug in a web
and the spider who spun it was you
why do I feel like I’m lost in a tale
and the writer who wrote it was you
you know what you do
it’s all about you!
when will we be free
of the ordinary things that make people so sad
there’s just got to be
a simpler kind of way to get along
and feel love the way it was meant to feel
why do I feel like a bug in a web
and the spider who spun it is you
why do I feel like I’m lost in a tale
and the writer who wrote it was you
why do I feel like a bug in a web
and the spider who spun it was you
why do I feel like I’m lost in a tale
and the writer who wrote it was you
you know what you do
it’s all about you!
it all comes to you
you know what you do
it’s all about you!
it all comes to you
you know what you do
it’s all about you...
